Since its creation in 1972, ENEM (Échange Nantes Étudiants du Monde) links foreign students with families from Nantes. Formerly known as AFA (Association d’Accueil Familial des Étudiants Étrangers), there are currently 30 families and over 40 students.
Making the match easier
The association was created to meet the demand of some international students enrolled at the University of Nantes wishing to meet French families. Over the years, ENEM has grown thanks to word of mouth between students within the university and other schools in Nantes.
The students’ main goal is linguistic. They wish to learn French or improve their knowledge of the language. Very often, all of their classes are taught in English.
Students also want to learn about the French lifestyle, customs and even the French cuisine.
Finally, for some, the warmth of a family helps them to integrate in a foreign country and city where they generally don’t know anyone.
